~*~For Caylee Anthony~*~

Sweet blossom of earliest spring
what frost cut you down, and why?
Did you babble the wrong words?
Fail to smile into your mother's gaze?
Did your eyes not toss enough twinkles
for all around you to share?
Was your infant laugh too unlike
a trickling streamlet or wee silver chimes?
Were your fingers not as soft
as duckling down or sifting snow?
Or were you too much in the way
so someone tripped on your small form
on her stairway to stellar pleasures?
Did your tears drown out the music
so that her dance steps went awry?
Was your flesh not tender enough
to stay on your growing bones
but must dwindle unheeded
to silent dust
in a hollow and toyless shell?

A small poem in memory of the 3/11 terrorist attacks in Spain....

~*~Lament for Spain~*~

Spain is wounded
like a little mother
clubbed down by a fist of darkness
her sisters stand about
with drooping heads
like helpless willows
as she clutches her lifeless child
in her arms, nothing in its face
but blood and questions.

~*~London Blasts~*~

~written 7/7/05 in memory of the terrorist attack on the London station~

The world erupted in the midst of a city
little worlds lay gasping all around
hearts exploded one by one
on the periphery of all warm doing.
Each fragment bloomed into a star
wished upon by lifted faces
which sang riddles handed down
from unending circles widening
out of the flaming core of being.
The enemy thirsting
scratched his name on melted pavement
then crouched in patient solitude
listening for the crumbling
of final hopes on which to feast,
dreaming of fawning virgins circling
as moths around a torch
of eternal consummation.

Written for an acquaintance who died of cervical cancer some years ago....

~*~For Stephanie~*~

I hope when you closed your eyes on this dimension
that what you saw was as shining and bright
as a newly minted star
or the eyes of a lover
or the first smile of a baby.
I hope it grew to the size of an angel
and wrapped its arms around you
and sang a song of welcome
composed especially for you.
I hope it extinguished the flames of pain
and cooled your face with a kiss of gladness
and filled your arms with flowers
that were never meant
for the altars of sorrow.

This I wrote in 2001 in memory of my beloved cat Moonbeam, who was with me for 12 years....

~*~Requiem for Moonie~*~

Today I put my sweet friend in the ground
beside a white rosebush
the chimes played lullabyes in the swaying breeze
I wrapped her in the shimmering lame
which I once used as a rainbowed sop to my own vanity
it now embraces a much lovelier being.
I laid a large stone I had decorated for my garden
with slivers of colored glass
in patterns that look like the dreams flowers have....
and as I stood over the tiny grave
a large black swallowtail butterfly
like a wonderful cinder
from burning celestial blueness
appeared in a gracious arabesque
and I heard birds from all corners
they are not her enemies now.
All the earth has become her friend
and from its verdant heart
you will hear her silent purr.
